On the way to the interior of the island, we have the opportunity to observe the fields where the wild cattle live and the richness of the interior of Terceira Island, preserved and maintained by the locals over the centuries.

We pass through the middle of a volcano, Pico da Bagacina, arriving at the trailhead where you will be amazed by the wonderful Lagoa do Negro.

The trail runs through the area of one of Terceira Island’s most recent eruptions, surrounded by pastures, Japanese cedar forests and other species that coexist with the stunning endemic vegetation. On the last part of the trail we have the opportunity to observe the crater of the Pico Gaspar volcano, rich in endemic flora.

Our picnic lunch will be at Lagoa das Patas with its natural evolution, where you can breathe in the fresh forest air and try to interact with the friendly ducks that live there.

After lunch, it’s time to go underground and visit the Christmas Cave. Originating from lava tubes and geological structures as diverse as different types of lava flows, stalactites and side balconies.

On the way back to Angra do Heroísmo, there’s still time for a brief stop at the Guilherme Moniz caldera, a protected area characterized by the presence of protected species of Micronesian forest.

There’s still time to visit Quinta dos Açores, one of the best places to buy local produce.
