Itinerary
We begin our tour in Lajes do Pico, travelling along the south coast towards Madalena, with a first stop in São Mateus. Here, we gain an understanding of the vast vineyard landscapes, whose wines were once exported to nearly every corner of the world, and learn how wine production has evolved over time.
Along the coastline, we encounter numerous clusters of traditional wine cellars, offering insight into how life has changed over the past 200 years. While many of these places appear abandoned today, the small cellars are still used as weekend houses or for the production of local table wine, which is still made by most island residents for personal consumption.
Within the protected vineyard area, we discover tidal pools, distilleries, wine presses, old warehouses, barrel rollers, vine trellises, and manor houses.
We then continue to the Criação Velha vineyards, the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. During a short walk, we learn why Pico wine is so unique in the world.
At the Wine Cooperative, we enjoy a wine tasting before returning to Madalena.
