The Azores are much more than volcanic landscapes and crater lakes. Behind many of the islands’ most iconic places lie local legends, traditional stories, and cultural narratives passed down through generations.
Recently, the Azores UNESCO Global Geopark launched the digital publication “Local Stories of Our Volcanoes”, a project that connects volcanic geology with local storytelling traditions from different UNESCO Global Geoparks across Europe.
This initiative helps visitors understand not only how the islands were formed, but also how local communities interpreted and explained these landscapes long before modern geology existed.
