Banco D. João de Castro is a large active submarine volcano located in the middle of the ocean. Its last eruption occurred in 1720. It presents itself as a seamount rising from a depth of -1000 metres up to -12 metres. At the top of the volcano lies a crater approximately 450 metres in diameter, with a depth range from -12 metres down to -25 metres.
Inside this crater there is an extensive area of hydrothermal vent fumaroles, visible during the dive in the form of bubbles released by escaping gases.
This is a unique experience where the dive takes place around the crater of the volcano.

Responsible diving practices are essential to protect the environment. Due to its crystal-clear waters, resulting from its location approximately 37 nautical miles from Terceira Island, sightings of large species during dives are frequent, such as groups of giant devil rays (Mobula tarapacana), schools of barracuda (Sphyraena viridensis), schools of Atlantic bonito (Sarda sarda), schools of amberjack (Seriola dumerili), schools of chubs (Kyphosus sectator), wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri), and occasionally loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta);
During the journey, sightings of whales and dolphins are common;
Images captured by the guides will be provided free of charge.
