Itinerary

This full-day tour offers a complete overview of Pico Island, combining culture, history, nature, and UNESCO heritage.

We begin our tour along the north coast, with stops in Cachorro and Lajido, former wine-producing areas. Here, we will find traditional wine cellars and other evidence linked to the golden age of Pico wine.

From there, we continue towards São Roque, where we visit one of the island’s many natural swimming pools, highly appreciated by the local community.

We then cross the Central Plateau towards the village of Lajes do Pico on the south coast. Along the way, we enjoy excellent views of São Jorge Island. At the highest point, we visit Lagoa do Capitão, one of Pico’s most beautiful lagoons, located in a protected landscape area. This is an excellent spot to observe resident and migratory birds, as well as native vegetation.

After lunch at a local restaurant in Lajes do Pico, we explore this traditional village, which was not only the first settlement on the island but also the whaling capital of the Azores. In addition to wine, whaling played a major role in Azorean history. Enjoy a walk through the narrow streets and a guided visit to the renowned Whalers Museum.

Before returning to Madalena along the south coast, we stop at the Criação Velha vineyards, the most emblematic place to understand why the Pico Vineyard Culture Landscape was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.

This tour has it all: fascinating facts about whales and wine, stunning landscapes, rich culture, and tradition. It offers a complete overview of Pico Island.
