ITINERARY 3: Caldeira of Sete Cidades & Lagoa do Canário & Cumeeira Grande – An adventurous bike ride requiring an adequate level of fitness, cycling around Cumeeira Grande (“Big Summit Rim“) of Sete Cidades, passing by various viewpoints and points of interest along the way that are well worth breaking a sweat over.

DESCRIPTION: At the starting point, we will spend around 15 minutes to give you a quick safety briefing, a demonstration on how to use your E-Bike and all its functions, show you how to use your GPS tracker and map, and hand out your equipment. Once you are set up, you’re ready to go and have fun!

Setting off with an easy warm up along the banks of Lagoa Azul (“Blue Lagoon“), taking you to the Peninsula, the peaceful picnic area of Baia do Silencio (“Silence Bay“) and through dirt roads back to the bridge. Your tour then takes you up a long, steep and winding main road, along which you may stop at the viewpoints of Lagoa de Santiago (“Lagoon of Santiago“) and Cerrado das Freiras (“Nuns Haven”). Continuing onwards and upwards around Lagoa de Santiago, taking a short but exciting detour up through an overgrown trail to the hidden viewpoint of Lagoa Rasa (“Shallow Lagoon“).  Back on the main road, you will continue ascending until you reach the park hosting Lagoa do Canário (“Canary Lagoon“). You may leave your bicycle in the parking area and walk up to the famous viewpoint of Boca do Inferno. Back on the main road again, you will be pass by the old aqueducts and Muro das Nove Janelas (“Wall of Nine Windows“), from which a more adventurous trail awaits, starting with a long steep incline up to Cumeeira Grande (“Big Summit Rim“) where you will enjoy magnificient views at Pico da Cruz (“Peak of the Cross”), and have fun on the graveled trail winding down, up and around the Big Caldeira Rim until reaching the Miradouro das Cumeeiras (“Viewpoint of the Ridge”). The rest of the trail will continue taking you around the rim with views to the lagoons on one side and views to the seaside village of Mosteiros on the other. The final part of this tour will take you down through the village of Sete Cidades, passing the Parish Church of São Nicolau, and finishing back at the Blue Lagoon.
