It is the fifth largest island in the archipelago, with an area of approximately 173,8 km2 and a population of 14.300 inhabitants spread over 13 parishes and a single municipality, Horta.
Geologically formed around 800.000 years ago, on this island we can observe the evolution of a volcanic island, and it is here that one can find what was the last volcanic phenomenon to occur in the Azores, the eruption of the Capelinhos volcano in 1957/58, which shaped the landscape and demography of the island, leaving a trail of destruction and at the same time of hope by giving birth to a new land, a land that holds a unique and distinct landscape from the entire archipelago.
Known for its cosmopolitan port and strong openness to the world, the island receives transatlantic sailors from all over the world, who leave a mark of their passage here in the form of paintings on the marina’s murals, a unique feature in the world.
Visiting Faial is having the unique experience of experiencing the connection between Man and the sea, feeling goosebumps when seeing a landscape that is in constant transformation, and above all, feeling that we are not alone in the vast Atlantic Ocean.
