Of an unparalleled lush green beauty, Flores island is the most western island of the archipelago. With an area of 141,6 km2, it is the second least populated island in the archipelago, accounting for 3.400 inhabitants, spread over two municipalities and 11 parishes.
Formed by volcanoes over more than two million years ago, the traces of volcanism are barely visible, however the landscape is marked by magnificent geological formations, some very particular, such as prismatic disjunctions. It is an island with very pronounced relief, with large ravines and cliffs, from where springs spring up, forming some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Azores.
Referred to by some as the most beautiful of the islands, Flores owes the name to the tact that when it was first discovered, the sides of the huge coastal cliffs were covered in flowers.
To visit the island of Flores, it is to embark on a journey through true insularity, and contemplation with the most well preserved nature of the entire archipelago.
