Itinerary
Janela do Inferno is a trail located in the southern part of São Miguel Island, starting near Casa da Água. Get ready to immerse yourself in a true fairy tale and enchanted forest! As you progress along the trail, don’t forget to look back and marvel at the breathtaking views over two of the island’s six municipalities, Lagoa and Ponta Delgada, framed by the deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean.
During the hike, you will cross several pastures, bridges, and a total of four tunnels nestled within the forest. These tunnels were originally built as part of old aqueducts to capture water for the local population and industries. Along the way, don’t miss the opportunity to take photos, as you will be surrounded by lush and vibrant vegetation, as well as small valleys crossed by streams that enhance the trail’s beauty. At the end, you will be rewarded with a stunning waterfall formed by a water erosion – a true natural spectacle.
Note: It is important to wear appropriate footwear, as the trail includes some descents and muddy areas. Additionally, bringing a flashlight is recommended, as the tunnels are dark and long. This hike is not particularly suitable for individuals with claustrophobia due to these conditions.
After this invigorating hike, what better way to relax? Of course, a visit to Caldeira Velha! Enjoy the thermal pools or, if you prefer, unwind under the waterfall with a natural massage. Don’t forget to capture the moment with an unforgettable photo to cherish later!
