Terceira

As its name indicates, it is the third largest island in the Azores and was the third island to be discovered. It has a total area of 403,4 km2 and a population of approximately 53.000 inhabitants, spread over the thirty parishes of the two municipalities, Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória.

Geologically formed more than a million years ago, Terceira island still show signs of active volcanism, such as the presence of small fumaroles, and it is on this island that you have the only opportunity to visit the interior of a volcano, Algar do Carvão.

It is known as the island of celebrations and a strong presence of great popular cultural manifestations, a very particular architectural heritage, Terceira island is distinguished from the other islands by its rich and vast cultural heritage.
