If you are planning to fly to the Azores, one of the first important decisions is choosing the airline and departure airport. Although the archipelago has nine islands, not all receive direct international flights. Choosing the right arrival point and route can help you avoid unnecessary layovers and extra costs.

Flights to the Azores from mainland Portugal

The main airline offering Azores flights is Azores Airlines, part of the SATA group. They offer direct flights to São Miguel, Terceira, Faial, Pico, and Santa Maria from Lisbon and Porto, with one of the highest weekly frequencies.

Another airline offering direct flights to the Azores is TAP Air Portugal, connecting Lisbon to São Miguel and Terceira (Lajes). TAP also serves other islands, although with a layover in Lisbon.

Flights to the Azores from other European countries

If you are travelling from Europe and looking for direct flights to the Azores, several airlines currently operate regular and seasonal routes to São Miguel, Terceira and other islands.
Note: Ryanair no longer operates flights to the Azores.

  • United Kingdom → Ponta Delgada / Terceira: British Airways and seasonal charter operations.
  • Spain → Ponta Delgada: Iberia from Madrid and SATA Azores Airlines from Barcelona.
  • Netherlands → Ponta Delgada: Transavia and TUI fly. Amsterdam → Terceira: seasonal TUI fly routes.
  • Germany → Azores: SATA Azores Airlines and Lufthansa Group / Discover Airlines operate seasonal connections from Frankfurt and Düsseldorf.
  • France → Azores: Transavia and SATA Azores Airlines from Paris.
  • Belgium → Ponta Delgada: seasonal flights with TUI fly Belgium.
  • Switzerland → Azores: Edelweiss and Swiss International Air Lines with seasonal flights from Zurich and Geneva.

Flights to the Azores from North America

From the United States, non-stop Azores flights are available via three airlines: SATA Azores Airlines, TAP Portugal, and United Airlines. Departures are from Boston, New York, and Oakland, with flight durations ranging from 5 to 10 hours depending on the city.

From Canada, direct flights operate from Toronto to São Miguel and Terceira (Lajes) with SATA Air Azores. Montreal also offers direct flights to Terceira.
