Located in the central group of the Azores, São Jorge is the longest and the most central island in the archipelago. It has a total area of 245,9 km2 and a population of 8.300 inhabitants spread over eleven parishes and two municipalities.
Owner of high cliffs, the island of São Jorge is known for its Fajãs, which are geological accidents at the foot of large cliffs that can originate from landslides or lava flows, and in these unique places an excellent microclimate develops for the development of certain agricultural crops, such as coffee.
São Jorge island evolved geologically along a fissure, forming a central range of dormant volcanoes which boosted the formation of its high ravines, especially on the north coast of the island.
It is an island full of charms and corners, preserved in its wildest state, having the opportunity to visit this beautiful island is to feel the relationship between Man and Nature in its purest state, where the adversities of nature were never an obstacle for its population.
