Sete Cidades: the best wonder of the Azores

First of all, it’s important to say that Sete Cidades is, for many, the image that best represents the Azores.

It’s a setting that combines legend, geology and one of those silences that truly fill the senses.

Where is Sete Cidades and what makes it so special?

Before you set off on your adventure, it’s worth knowing exactly where it is.

Sete Cidades is located on the western side of São Miguel Island, inside the caldera of a large dormant volcano.

In addition, the caldera is about 5.3 km in diameter and has a maximum depth of approximately 630 meters, formed thousands of years ago.

Inside this crater lies the famous Sete Cidades Lagoon, which is actually made up of two distinct lakes:

  • Lagoa Azul (Blue Lake)
  • Lagoa Verde (Green Lake)

They are connected by a small channel crossed by a bridge, forming the largest natural freshwater reservoir in the Azores.

Furthermore, the difference in color is due to the way the light reflects on the water, the different depths and the presence of algae and aquatic vegetation. On sunny days, the contrast between blue and green is especially striking; therefore, many travelers plan their visit according to the weather.

It is no coincidence that the Sete Cidades Lagoon is considered one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal and one of the main postcards of the archipelago.

Thus, Sete Cidades has become a must-see stop on any itinerary around São Miguel Island and, consequently, one of the most photographed areas in the Azores.

The legend of the green-eyed princess and the blue-eyed shepherd

Science explains the colors of the lake; however, the heart of the Azores prefers the legend. Therefore, getting to know the story behind Sete Cidades makes your visit even more special and, above all, more emotional.

It is said that, a long time ago, there was a kingdom in this valley where Princess Antília lived, with blue eyes. One day, the princess fell in love with a humble shepherd with green eyes, and a forbidden love was born. When the king decided to separate them, they said goodbye in one last meeting, in tears.

From the shepherd’s tears the Green Lake was formed. From the princess’s tears the Blue Lake was born. Since then, people say that the colors of the lake forever preserve the reflection of this impossible love. Consequently, the legend has become part of the emotional identity of Sete Cidades and, moreover, is often told on tours and guided visits.

What to see in Sete Cidades?

Main viewpoints in Sete Cidades

Boca do Inferno Viewpoint (Grota do Inferno)

First of all, it’s worth starting at the Boca do Inferno Viewpoint. This is one of the most impressive viewpoints on São Miguel. From the wooden walkways and platforms you can see practically the entire caldera: the Sete Cidades Lagoon, Lagoa de Santiago and other smaller lakes scattered throughout the valley. On clear days, it’s the kind of panorama that stays in your memory and, moreover, makes for incredible photos.

Vista do Rei Viewpoint

Next, the Vista do Rei Viewpoint is the most iconic and easiest to access in Sete Cidades. From here you get the classic view of the Blue and Green Lakes, with the bridge in the distance and the green valley all around. In addition, the name “Vista do Rei” recalls the visit of the Portuguese kings to the site in the early 20th century, which adds a historical touch to the scenery.

Cerrado das Freiras Viewpoint & Lagoa de Santiago

On the other hand, the Cerrado das Freiras Viewpoint offers an excellent perspective of the difference in size between the Green and Blue Lakes, framed by fields and the village.

Meanwhile, the Lagoa de Santiago Viewpoint reveals a smaller, deeply green lake, set in an amphitheater of slopes covered with cryptomeria trees, creating a more intimate and mysterious atmosphere. Thus, those who visit both viewpoints get very different views of Sete Cidades and, in this way, better understand the scale of the caldera.

The village and lake shores of Sete Cidades

The village of Sete Cidades is small, peaceful and welcoming, with fewer than a thousand inhabitants.

It is surrounded by meadows, vegetable gardens and pasture fields along the shores of the lake, offering a typically Micaelense scenery and, above all, a very authentic atmosphere.

In addition, some points of interest in the village include:

  • The Church of São Nicolau, with its central tower and tree-lined access path – very photogenic.
  • The bridge that symbolically separates the “green side” from the “blue side” of the lake.
  • Small cafés, picnic areas and leisure spots that are ideal to relax in after a walk or hike.

Outdoor activities in Sete Cidades

Besides the scenery, Sete Cidades is a true invitation to explore the outdoors. So, if you love nature, you’ll find a natural “adventure park” here. Among the most popular activities are:

  • Canoeing, kayaking and paddleboarding on the calm waters of the lake, allowing you to enjoy the landscape from inside the crater.

  • Bike rides along the shore and on rural roads in the caldera, ideal for families and groups of friends.

  • Hiking trails, such as:
    • Vista do Rei – Sete Cidades (PR3 SMI), descending from the rim down to the village, with successive views over the lake.
    • Trails through the Mata do Canário area and along the caldera rim, with wide views over the crater and the north coast of São Miguel.

For those who love landscape photography, practically any of these trails yields true “postcards” of the Azores. That’s why many travelers choose Sete Cidades as one of the highlights of their trip and, moreover, recommend the place to friends and family.

The abandoned Monte Palace Hotel

Next to the Vista do Rei Viewpoint stands the famous Monte Palace Hotel, a former luxury hotel opened in the late 1980s and closed shortly afterwards. Today, the building is abandoned, but it still arouses curiosity due to its privileged location overlooking the Sete Cidades Lagoon.

However, the interior is in ruins and access is not officially authorized. Therefore, the safest and most recommended way to enjoy the view is always from the official viewpoints. In this way, you ensure your safety and, at the same time, respect local guidelines.

A protected treasure in Sete Cidades

In addition to its scenic beauty, Sete Cidades is part of the São Miguel Natural Park, due to its high landscape, geological and ecological value. The caldera is the result of major past eruptions and, although the volcano is now considered dormant, its shape still defines the entire surrounding landscape. In short, it is a natural treasure that deserves to be preserved.

Practical tips for visiting Sete Cidades

Best time of day

Clear mornings usually offer the best views from the viewpoints. As the day goes on, fog often forms along the caldera rim, which can limit visibility.
Therefore, if you can, plan your visit to Sete Cidades for the early hours of the day. This way, you increase your chances of finding good conditions to enjoy the view.

Weather

The weather in the Azores is very changeable and can shift several times throughout the day. For this reason, always bring a light waterproof jacket, even in the summer months, and comfortable footwear suitable for trails. In addition, it’s advisable to check the weather forecast before heading out, so you can better adjust the timing of your visit.

How to get there

From Ponta Delgada, the drive to Sete Cidades takes around 25 to 30 minutes, along scenic roads with several intermediate viewpoints and the possibility of visiting other lakes, such as Lagoa do Canário. Thus, it’s a perfect trip for a half-day or full-day outing and, moreover, very accessible for those staying in the city.

Can you swim in the lake?

No, swimming in the lake is not allowed. However, you can enjoy the lagoon through activities such as kayaking or paddleboarding.
Alternatively, you can simply walk along the shore and take in the view.

Respecting nature

To help preserve this unique scenery, keep a few simple rules in mind. For example:

  • Do not leave rubbish and always use the bins provided.
  • Stick to the marked trails, avoiding walking over sensitive areas.
  • Do not disturb livestock, birds or other local wildlife.

This way, you directly contribute to the preservation of Sete Cidades for future generations.

Conclusion

After discovering the legend, the viewpoints, the trails and the peaceful life of the village, it’s easy to understand why Sete Cidades is so often called the “best wonder of the Azores”. Here, nature, history and local culture come together in a setting that stays in the memory of everyone who visits.

Whether you travel with family, as a couple or on an adventure with friends, one thing is certain: including Sete Cidades in your São Miguel itinerary means choosing a complete experience, with breathtaking views, moments of absolute silence and activities for every taste.
